During normal operation all menu titles (File, Edit, View, etc.) *except* Help are greyed out while a processing dialog is open. Occasionally, with versions prior to v4.60, this disabled menu state persists beyond when it should: this is what's happened to you. Even restarting the program doesn't help, because the menu state is saved in the registry along with toolbar positions and customizations.

There are two ways to fix this. The first takes a bit of a knack, but it's worth trying: start MaxIm DL and double-click rapidly on the (apparently disabled) File menu caption. With luck, the menu will drop anyway. At this point you want to open an image, *any* image. The Open command itself may be disabled, but you should still be able to reopen an image from the "most recently used" list near the bottom of the menu. Once you get an image open, just close it again using the "X" in the top right corner, and your menu should be returned to the proper state.

If you can't make this work, the second way is to force MaxIm DL to reinitialize its menu and toolbar state on start-up. You do this with the Registry Editor as follows:

1) Click Start > Run...
2) Type REGEDIT and click OK
3) In the left-hand pane, find and select (left-click on) the entry HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Diffraction Limited\MaxIm DL 4\CurrentVersion
4) In the right-hand pane, right-click on "D142_ActiveSkin" and select Delete from the pop-up menu
5) Exit from the Registry Editor

Now when you restart MaxIm DL, the menus should be functional again
